John 12: Is Your Soul Troubled?
Verse of the Day: (V27) “Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.”

1. Spikenard (V1-22)
V3 “Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.”

When Mary anointed Jesus with an expensive ointment of spikenard or perfume, Jesus knew that she understood His impending death. The spikenard was used by the rich for the burial of their dead. Mary’s willingness to invest in the spikenard demonstrated her belief that Jesus was the Son of God. However the disciples were shocked, particularly Judas Iscariot who later betrayed Jesus, as they thought that it was a real waste of money.

V7 “Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.”

2. Soul (V23-36)
V27 “Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.”

Jesus’ soul was troubled as He who was sinless was about to die for the sins of the whole world. However, Jesus humbly obeyed God, His Father’s will, and went to the cross to shed His precious blood for the sins of the whole world, and thereby glorified His Father.

V28 “Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

3. Save (V37-50)
V47 “And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.”

Jesus told the people that He came to this world not to judge them, but to save them. Though the people had sinned against God, yet God loves the world that He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to die for their sins. Jesus’ first coming to this earth was as a Son of man to save the whole world. Whosoever therefore believes in Jesus shall not perish, but have everlasting life with Him in heaven. However, Jesus’ second coming to this earth shall be as the King of kings and the Lord of lords to judge the sins of the whole world.

V48 “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.”

Prayer of the Day:
Dearest God, I commit my troubled soul to You, and fully trust You for everything.
